who we are and what we are looking for
Tinderbox Music is an independent promotion company based in the uptown area of Minneapolis.  We assist both local and national bands in obtaining radio and press.  Tinderbox works with Indie Rock, Alternative, Americana, Pop-Rock, Pop-Punk, Alt-Country, Acoustic-based music, some Jazz and Hip Hop.  Some of our clients include local artists such as The Honeydogs, Ellis, Halloween Alaska, The Owls, Umbrella Sequence, Jeremy Messersmith, These Modern Socks, The New Standards as well as national artists such as The Bad Plus, Dan Wilson/Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, Ingrid Michaelson, Jessy Greene, Margot and the Nucluear So and So's, Josh Rouse, Rachael Sage, Camper Van Beethoven, and Trampoline Records (the independent label owned by Pete Yorn and Rami Jaffee of The Wallflowers).

Tinderbox Music is looking for interns to help with radio promotions department.

function of program
Tinderbox Music has developed an educational internship program designed to give students an opportunity to receive hands on experience in college radio promotions.  The student will learn about the pursuit of radio airplay and day-to-day operations of the company. If a student is interested in learning about other divisions of Tinderbox (including independent CD distribution, press promotions and music publishing), we will attempt to expose the intern to those aspects of the company as well.

description of responsibilities
An intern's main responsibility involves contacting music directors at college radio stations across the country in order to promote and track airplay for Tinderbox artists. Other duties include recording all radio information to their proper tracking reports, collating artist promotion kits, assisting in answering incoming calls, and occasional office upkeep. Occasional assistance may be needed in other Tinderbox departments such as distribution (dropping product off at the local record stores, making a trip to the post office or going to pick up office supplies) and press promotion (archiving press articles and reviews for Tinderbox clients).

duties may vary depending on previous experience and job performance.

expectations of intern
We require that interns have excellent phone skills, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, good written skills, and attention to detail.  An insatiable passion for music and a sense of humor definitely helps. Previous music business experience is a huge plus, but your work ethic and interview will be the deciding factors.

hours
Minimum of 15-20 hours per week between the hours of 10 am to 6 pm Monday - Friday (we are NOT open on weekends and evenings).  We can be flexible with each intern's schedule depending on the availability.

duration of internship
Typically we select two interns every four months.  Although applications are accepted year round, we try to schedule internships into 4-month sessions from September through December, January through April, and May through August.  We do offer shorter January term internships (typically full time, 40 hours per week) for school credit as well as 3-month summer internships coinciding with school schedules.

compensation
Tinderbox internships are unpaid but they do include occasional perks such as free CDs and access to concerts. College credit may be earned depending on specific school requirements. Upon the completion of the student's internship, if the student has done well Tinderbox can write a letter of recommendation for the student and we will make them aware of other music internships or jobs in the industry, depending upon availability.  It is not uncommon for someone to work two or three unpaid internships before they ever get a paying gig in this industry.  This internship not only gives you immediate experience, but it can open up a lot of doors down the road.

application procedure
Send a cover letter and resume to Tinderbox office. Please follow up with a phone call to set up an interview.
